Frequently Asked Questions
What is somatic movement therapy?
"Soma" is the Greek word for body. Somatic movement is gentle, therapeutic movement that connects body and brain. At Body Redeemed Somatics, this work helps all ages release body‑held tension and trauma, repattern the nervous system, and reclaim peace.
Somatic movement therapy is a body‑focused approach to mental health. Why the body? Because every feeling begins in the body. When a feeling has deep roots in childhood or infancy, the brain often struggles to make sense of it or talk about it.
Body Redeemed Somatics is rooted in the love of Jesus and founding principles align with a Biblical worldview.
Body Redeemed Somatics is the only practice in West Michigan offering somatic movement therapy for kids.
What happens in a somatic movement session?
In a single session, you may be lying on the floor, sitting on a large exercise ball or chair, standing, or moving through the space — always with attention to your comfort level and abilities.
Somatic work is slow and gentle by nature, the opposite of "no‑pain‑no‑gain."
We move. We talk. We move again. We play (because movement is play — and play rewires the brain, even for adults). We exhale and release tension that no longer serves. We notice the stuck patterns in our movement that mirror the stuck patterns in our lives.
Parents participate in children's sessions because parent‑child connection and play are essential to healing.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to lie, sit, stand, crawl, and move with ease. Layers that cover knees and elbows are helpful for floor work. Socks or bare feet are required to protect the floating foam floor.
What if I have a disability, injury, or chronic condition?
Somatic movement therapy is adaptable and appropriate for individuals with disabilities, chronic pain, chronic illness, or injury. This work respects your body's abilities, limitations, and wellness needs — physically, emotionally, and neurologically.
Do you take insurance? What are your rates?
Somatic movement therapy is a self‑pay therapeutic specialty and does not participate with insurance. HSA cards are accepted.
